Where does a church member go if they have a concern? Where does a staff member turn when they need to discuss a job change in confidence? Who does an overworked pastor rely on for help?
First Bethel’s staff-parish relations committee provides a mediating resource through which pastors, staff members, and members of the congregation can come to discuss items that may require the presence of a third party. The committee helps the pastors and staff members in assessing their gifts and setting priorities for leadership and service. Committee members speak up when there is a need for additional leadership, or when the responsibilities of the pastors and staff members need to be reevaluated.
The staff-parish relations committee supports the pastors and staff and their families, confers with them regarding matters such as continuing education and effectiveness in ministry, promotes unity within the church, develops job descriptions, evaluates and recommends new candidates for ministry, consults on matters pertaining to pulpit supply, vacation, health insurance, housing, pension, and much, much more.
The services that the staff-parish relations committee performs are many and vital. Just as Jesus seeks to restore relationships—with people and with God—so it is through loving relationships that the church lives out its true identity in Christ.
