In 2004, five churches in the South Park area—Shiloh Baptist, Mt. Zion Baptist, Peters Creek Baptist, Sunrise Baptist, and Faith Temple—united in what is now known as Melting Pot Ministries in order to serve and minister to the people in their communities.
“This grass-roots organization, representing a wide cross-section of the South Hills community, focused on the escalation in the number of academically underachieving youth, drug problems, and juvenile delinquency cases in our suburban neighborhoods. This need to provide services to this growing at-risk population was urgent and emerged out of an influx of low-income, single-head of households following the demolition of deteriorating inner city public housing.”
From this genesis, Melting Pot Ministries has grown into its vision to “provide family-friendly settings in which to introduce physical and behavioral health prevention, intervention, and treatment options to children/adolescents and family members.”
Through its Summer Bible Camp and After School Enrichment Program, Melting Pot Ministries touches the lives of over 100 area children and their families through programs such as adult supervised computer access for academics, tutoring provided by professional teachers, leadership training, education on making positive life decisions, and weekly group therapy for older participants. The six-week summer program includes daily provision of breakfast and lunch, as well as Bible study, a reading program, and field trips. As a result, participants have exhibited a significant increase in academic scores and school attendance.
First Bethel has supported Melting Pot Ministries by providing needed items, and we continue to grow in our involvement as Melting Pot grows.

“This program has been such a blessing for me. I have met so many lovely students and their families. Right now, I teach reading skills for students grades K to 4.” - Kim
